Environmental Discussions & Personal Health

I talked to my dad, who works for LG transportation right now in Malaysia. He told me that LG - Plants tree
- makes environmentally friendly products
- recycles more than 250,000 units of used home appliances a year.

- and uses the concept of LCA (life cycle assessment) in order to see the impacts of the products to the environment.

My dad didn't know that well about the environmentally friendly things at LG because he only works for the transportation organization. This would relate to my personal health, because if the company doesn't do something that benefits to the environment, the pollution that is produced by these products will affect the air that we breath in, which in the long-term effect affect our lung or heart. By planting tree, it will help get rid of some proportion of carbon dioxide, which then later would clean the air we breath in. By making environmentally friendly products we will be able to decrease the amount of pollution made.

Looking ahead: An FCD Thought or Two

It was an interesting experience to meet Roger from FCD to come and talk to us during health class. Firstly, it was because I have never met anyone who took drug before, so it was interesting and special to hear him talk about his teenage life. I thought that he would feel uncomfortable to talk to us about drug substances at first, however, it turned out that him talking about his experience turned out to be a useful advice to us. Another thing that I liked about it was that, I thought the mood of this program would be more serious, but at the end I realized that the respresentative of FCD talked about his experience and the consequences in order for us to make the right choice, when we are in that kind of situation.

Personal Food & Exercise Analysis

  • My positive elements in my diet are grain, vegetable, fruit, saturated fat, cholesteral and sodium. Fruit and vegetables were easy to keep up with because I eat fruits & vegetables every day. However, my negative elements are milk and total fat. For milk I need to obtain at least 3 cups, but I only had 1 cup.And for total fat, I need to have 25% to 35%, but I only had 21.7% of total calories. I can improve my total calories by eating fish, vegetable oil, and meat fat etc.... The food group present in my diet are all the important groups, milk(dairy), meat and beans, vegetables, fruits, but as mentioned above I need to consume more dairy and fat products.
  • Some categories are overabundant some are insufficient. I have 3 categories, which are overabundant: carbohydrate, Vitamin C, and magnesium. I don't think consuming a large amount of Vitamin C will affect my health in a bad way, however in a good way because I heard that Vitamin C helps us lose our weight as well as prevent from having a cold. As well as helps the structure of muscles, bones... For carbohydrate I should reduce the intake of sugar, to make sure my weight doesn't increase, but overall it lowers the risk of having a heart disease which is an advantage. I also have approximately 5 categories where the nutrients are insufficient: Vitamin A, vitamin E, calcium, potassium and sodium. To improve vitamin A I need to eat more orange vegetables, dark green leafy, orange fruit, and tomato, if I don't my eye sight will worsen in dim light so I need to. To impove Vitamin E I would need to consume more nuts and vegetable oils. For potassium, I need to consume white or sweet potato, cooked greens etc... For sodium, I would need to eat more fresh vegetable, meat, or fish, if I don't I will have loss of calcium in bone, which would weaken my bone as time passes.
  • My total duration for physical activities were 90 minutes. This was an approximately perfect duration compared with the food I consume because I got 100/100 which is a good start for my health. The total calories expended was 234 calories out of a total of 1383, which reduces the total amount of calories I intake. If I continue doing the same amount of physical activities and approximately the amount of foods I consume, I will be able to maintain a healthy/strong body!

Health in the News

"Computers, TVs Pose Health Risk to Children"

Article Information

Title: Computers, TVs Pose Health Risk toChildren
Author: Bae Ji-Sook (staff reporter)

Date published: January 18th2009

Summary

There are many students who sit in front of the computer for over 4 hours or who watches the TV for at least 3 hours can lead to health problems. The main problems are growth, back pain and lack of appetite. Overuses prevent us from growing to average height as well as obesity, this is because student's spend more time sitting down rather than being active and exercising our body. A way to solve this problem is to turn offyour TV's meal times, and get computers out of student’s rooms! It will improve our quality of life!

What does the Article Mean? (BigMeaning)

The main point is that students or business workers need to WAKE UP! And reduce using electronics, and become more ACTIVE! Globally, if we don't reduce our time in front of the computer our average size will reduce (which I believe many people won't appreciate) as well as global warming will increase if everyone uses the computer and television forover 4 hours every single day. Also the article is trying to tell us that inorder to keep healthy we need to watch out what we do every day, because even if it's a small action, as this builds up, it could lead to serious trouble in future.

Why do I care? (Personal Meaning)

This impacts me personally because this might be a part of a reason why I'm not that tall. I felt like this article was talking about me as well, so I thought about how many hours I watch TV and use the computer, my average was similar to the results that came out on the article. (2 hours TV, 4 hours computer). Therefore, in order to improve myself, I will try to reduce my time on the computer (only use it for homework & a bit during the weekend). I hope this reason will disappear from the reasons that I am not tall! > <
